How a bespoke engagement ring comes about

You describe what you have in mind: the stone, the metal, a budget and, if there is one, a date. Goldsmiths who suit the request reply with a proposal and a price. The work starts with a sketch for a fixed amount, which is deducted in full once it becomes a commission. You see the design before any gold is cast, and you follow the making from the bench.

What decides the price

Three things: the metal and its weight, the stone, and the hours at the bench. A solitaire in 14 carat gold with a lab-grown diamond is a different ring from a platinum halo with a natural stone, even when they look alike in a photo. Name your budget in the request. A goldsmith can steer the design towards it, with a slightly smaller stone or a different alloy, and will tell you honestly what is possible.

An heirloom stone or your own gold

Many engagement rings begin with a grandmother’s ring. A goldsmith can reset the stone in a new design and can often rework the old gold as well. Mention it in your request and add a photo. The goldsmith will tell you whether the stone can be reset safely and how much of the gold can be reused.

Ring size and a surprise proposal

If it has to stay a secret, borrow a ring that is worn on the same finger and measure the inner diameter, or ask the goldsmith for advice. Most designs can be resized a little afterwards. Ask about it before the design is final, because a ring set with stones all the way round cannot be resized.

How long does a bespoke engagement ring take?
That depends on the design and on how busy the goldsmith is. Every proposal states a delivery time. Count on weeks rather than days, and put the date in your request if there is one.
Can I choose a lab-grown diamond or a coloured stone?
Yes. Say what you prefer: natural, lab-grown, or a coloured stone such as sapphire. The goldsmith sources the stone or works with one you bring.
Is my payment safe?
You pay through Lujoro. The money is held and only released to the goldsmith at the milestones you approve, the last one on delivery.
