Two rings, one design
Wedding rings are made as a pair, but they need not be identical: the same profile in two widths, one with stones and one without, two colours of gold that share a finish. Describe both hands and both tastes in your request. A goldsmith designs the pair so that the rings belong together.
What decides the price
Mostly the metal. The alloy (14 or 18 carat gold, platinum), the width and the thickness decide the weight, and the weight decides most of the price. Handwork comes next: a hammered or engraved finish, a row of stones. Wide, heavy rings in platinum cost several times what slim rings in 14 carat gold cost. Name your budget for the pair and the goldsmith designs within it.
Rings from your own gold
Family gold, such as a parent’s wedding ring or inherited jewellery, can often be melted down and forged into new rings. Not every alloy can be reused as it is, and the goldsmith can only tell you what is possible after seeing it. Mention it in your request with a photo and, if you can read it, the carat stamp.
Timing, size and engraving
Start in good time. Ask for proposals a few months before the wedding, so there is room for a design round and a fitting. Fingers change with temperature and season, so have your size measured by a goldsmith instead of guessing, and measure wide rings with a wide sizing ring. An engraving on the inside, such as a date, a name or a fingerprint, is usually the last step.
Questions people ask
- Which metal stands up best to daily wear?
- Platinum and 18 carat gold hold up well when worn every day. Silver is softer and scratches sooner. A goldsmith can advise based on your work and your habits.
- Can we forge our own wedding rings?
- Some ateliers give workshops in which couples make their own rings under guidance. Ask about it in your request.
- How does payment work?
- You pay once, through Lujoro. The money is held safely and reaches the goldsmith per milestone you approve, the last one when the rings are delivered.
