A piece that carries someone
Memorial jewellery keeps a person or an animal close: a ring with a little ash sealed inside, a pendant with a fingerprint, a lock of hair behind glass, or a loved one’s own jewellery remade into something you will wear. There is no fixed form. A goldsmith starts from what you want to keep with you.
Ash, a fingerprint or their gold
These are the three most common starting points. For ash, a very small amount is enough; it is sealed invisibly inside the piece or set so that it can be seen. A fingerprint is taken from an ink print or from a print made by the funeral director, and is engraved or cast in the metal. Their jewellery can be worn as it is on a chain, combined with your own, or melted down into a new piece.
Take your time
There is no deadline. Many people order a memorial piece months or even years later. If you may want a fingerprint one day, ask the funeral director to take one now. The piece itself can wait until you are ready.
What decides the price
The metal, the size of the piece, whether there is a stone, and the handwork. A silver pendant with a fingerprint is a very different commission from a gold ring with an ash chamber. Name a budget in your request and the goldsmith will propose what fits within it.
Questions people ask
- How do I get the ash or the jewellery to the goldsmith?
- You agree on that with the goldsmith: by insured post, or handed over in person at the atelier. Many people choose an atelier nearby for this reason.
- Can a memorial piece be made for a pet?
- Yes. Ash, fur or a paw print can be worked into a piece in the same way.
- Is my payment safe?
- You pay through Lujoro. The money is held and only released to the goldsmith at the milestones you approve, the last one on delivery.
